The Exactis Breach
Nearly Every American Adult is Compromised
Florida-based marketing and data-aggregation company, Exactas, was breached in an attack that exposed nearly 340 million individual records, 230 of which were consumers and the remaining 110 million being businesses.
In a statement released by Wired, Security researcher Vinny Toria, who initially uncovered the breach earlier in the month, said “It seems like this is a database with pretty much every U.S. citizen in it. I don’t know where the data is coming from, but it’s one of the most comprehensive collections I’ve ever seen.”
The Palm Coast company’s inability to keep their system secure is not an isolated occurrence, with companies such as SunTrust, Equifax, Yahoo and more, revealing their own system breaches and the extent of personal data that had been compromised through these successful attacks. Although this is one of the largest data breaches to have occurred in recent times, Exactis does not store Social Security Numbers or credit card information on their systems, however, they do house a variety of personal information, including addresses, telephone numbers, and individual character traits among other things, making it easier for someone to take on a stolen identity, or otherwise utilize the information.
